Waiuku Forest is about 15 minutes drive from Waiuku town centre. It borders the Tasman Sea and the Waikato River. It is actually quite hard to find a lot of information about the forest. We would love for some more detailed literature on the walks and trails there. It is a beautiful forest with a lot to be explored. We moved to Waiuku 3 1/2 years ago and have only been once to the forest so it was time to explore again. We took our bikes and walking feet and set off. It also happened there was a big horse riding event on and the place was full of horse carts and of course horses. This did mean that a couple of the car parks were closed but we drove through as directed and ended up at the mine car park. The area is used to mine iron sand and of course forestry.
We spent a couple of hours exploring, getting muddy and worrying about getting lost as there were no maps or walking signs!!! We enjoyed what we saw, got some exercise and had fun!! We will try and be more prepared next time by working out the walking trails!
